     There is an interesting, not directly obvious, application of the shortest path algorithms that is probably used quite often in algorithmic trading and financial sector that deals with trading assets and goods.

     Imagine that you could convert 1000 USD to 950 EUR and then 950 EUR to 1020 CAD which you convert back to 1007 USD :) Just by converting from currency to currency you can make money.

     This situation is called arbitrage opportunity. This can be done with any asset and between different markets.

     In this case, the relations between assets are modeled as directed edge-weighted graph and finding so called negative-cycles in the graph is in fact finding these arbitrage opportunities.

     Given a number of cities with highways connecting them, find the shortest path from New York to Chicago.

     The traffic and length of the highways are path weights.

     To squabble about the performance of binary-trees is meaningless - they are not a data structure, but a family of data structures, all with different performance characteristics. While it is true that unbalanced binary trees perform much worse than self-balancing binary trees for searching, there are many binary trees (such as binary tries) for which "balancing" has no meaning.

     Applications of binary trees

     • Binary Search Tree - Used in many search applications where data is constantly entering/leaving, such as the map and set objects in many languages' libraries.
     • Binary Space Partition - Used in almost every 3D video game to determine what objects need to be rendered.
     • Binary Tries - Used in almost every high-bandwidth router for storing router-tables.
     • Hash Trees - Used in torrents and specialized image-signatures in which a hash needs to be verified, but the whole file is not available. Also used in blockchains for eg. Bitcoin.
     • Heaps - Used in implementing efficient priority-queues, which in turn are used for scheduling processes in many operating systems, Quality-of-Service in routers, and A* (path-finding algorithm used in AI applications, including robotics and video games). Also used in heap-sort.
     • Huffman Coding Tree (Chip Uni) - Used in compression algorithms, such as those used by the .jpeg and .mp3 file-formats.
     • GGM Trees - Used in cryptographic applications to generate a tree of pseudo-random numbers.
     • Syntax Tree - Constructed by compilers and (implicitly) calculators to parse expressions.
     • Treap - Randomized data structure used in wireless networking and memory allocation.
     • T-tree - Though most databases use some form of B-tree to store data on the drive, databases which keep all (most) their data in memory often use T-trees to do so.

     The reason that binary trees are used more often than n-ary trees for searching is that n-ary trees are more complex, but usually provide no real speed advantage.

     In a (balanced) binary tree with m nodes, moving from one level to the next requires one comparison, and there are log_2(m) levels, for a total of log_2(m) comparisons.

     In contrast, an n-ary tree will require log_2(n) comparisons (using a binary search) to move to the next level. Since there are log_n(m) total levels, the search will require log_2(n)*log_n(m) = log_2(m) comparisons total. So, though n-ary trees are more complex, they provide no advantage in terms of total comparisons necessary.

     (However, n-ary trees are still useful in niche-situations. The examples that come immediately to mind are quad-trees and other space-partitioning trees, where divisioning space using only two nodes per level would make the logic unnecessarily complex; and B-trees used in many databases, where the limiting factor is not how many comparisons are done at each level but how many nodes can be loaded from the hard-drive at once)

     Finding the median is a common application of such algorithm. E.g. I've used it in image processing for the median filter. Min, max, k-NN also use order statistic algorithms, so that's another application.

     Simple. What does a singleton do?

     • It provides global access to an instance of an object, and
     • It guarantees that no more than one instance of that type can ever be created.

     So you use a singleton when you need both of these things.

     And that is rare. Globals are generally speaking, bad. We tend to avoid them when possible. And building your application around the assumption that "if more than one instance exists, it is an error" is dangerous, because you typically find out the assumption didn't hold. Perhaps you want to be able to create multiple instances locally, for caching purposes. Perhaps it turns out you need more than one database, more than one log, or perhaps threading performance requires you to give each thread its own instance.

     In any case, you don't need to enforce the "only one instance may exist" assumption. If you only need one instance, simply create only one instance. But leave the constructor publicly visible so that more instances can be created if it turns out to be necessary.

     In other words, both of the features offered by a singleton are actually negatives. In general, we don't want our data to be globally visible, and we don't want to take away flexibility for no reason.

     If you do need one of the features offered by a singleton, implement that one feature, without the other. If you need something to be globally accessible, make it a global. Not a singleton. And if you do need to enforce that only one instance will exist (I can't think of any plausible situations where you'd want this), then implement that, without the global visibility.

     The only real world application of singletons I've ever seen has been "an architect has read the GoF book, and decided to cram design patterns in everywhere.", or "some programmer stuck in the 80's isn't comfortable with the whole "object oriented" thing, and wants to code procedurally, which means storing data as globals. And singletons sounds like an "OOP" way to make globals without getting yelled at".

     The key point is that a singleton mixes two, very different, and each very rarely needed, responsibilities. Typically, you want at most one of those in any given object.

   Raster graphics
