   • We visited Kerr Lake State Recreation Area for the state parks passport challenge. The park consists of seven recreation area scattered around the North Carolina side of Kerr Lake. Most of the park amenities are around camping and Lake activities and only a couple short trails. In the summer, there is a fee to enter, but free in the winter.

   When was Kerr Lake created?

   • It was created by daming of the Roanoke River in 1952. The lake itself includes more than 500 miles of shoreline, and the North Carolina state recreation sites cover nearly 3,400 acres. The Occoneechee (or Occaneechi) Indians once lived in the Kerr Lake area until they were dispersed by Nathanial Bacon in 1676.
