May 24, 2024 · In 1641 Jonas Bronck, a Scandinavian, purchased 500 acres (200 hectares). Shortly thereafter religious dissenters and New England settlers moved there, trespassing on Dutch territory. The borough was a part of Westchester county until 1898, when it was incorporated in the city of New York.

Oct 30, 2020 · According to Bronx County historian Lloyd Ultan, “The” stuck as part of the name when the borough was named after the Bronx River which runs right through it (which was named after the first European settler in our borough, Jonas Broncks). The Bronx River runs past the Snuff Mill in the Botanical Gardens.
