The Roebling Bridge reopened on November 13, 2020, with Covington and Cincinnati police monitoring traffic on the bridge. On February 15, 2021, the bridge closed for a nine-month rehabilitation project; it reopened in November 2021.
The Bridge Company had selected John Roebling as chief engineer to design and build the bridge. Construction began in September 1856. The initial work was to prepare the foundations for the Ohio tower. With both towers under construction, work halted in 1858 as additional funding became unavailable after a widespread financial downturn in 1857.

John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, spanning the Ohio River from Cincinnati to Covington, Kentucky, at night. On May 22, 1831, Roebling left Prussia with a group of emigrants bound for the United States. They included his brother Carl and the older Johann Adolphus Etzler, who believed in a technological utopia.
Construction began in September 1856, continued sporadically throughout the Civil War, and was completed in December 1866. Roebling's bridge brought the thriving industrial cities of Covington and Cincinnati into closer and more regular contact than ever before.
