Icelandair traces its roots back to 1937, when Flugfélag Akureyrar was founded in Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland. Flight operations started in 1938 with a single Waco YKS-7 configured as a floatplane. In 1939 the airline was grounded when this aircraft was destroyed in a capsizing accident.

- Starting an airline in 1937. Of course, starting its first flights is a key milestone in the history of any airline. But this was an especially bold step in a country with a population of around 117,000 at the time.
- Loftleidir Icelandic and flights to the US in 1948. Services in Iceland expanded quickly in the early years. A new airline was created in the county in 1944, known as Loftleidir Icelandic.
- Entering the jet age with the Boeing 727. Services on both domestic and long-haul routes increased through the 1950s and 1960s. This saw the introduction of several new turboprop aircraft, including several Douglas models, the Fokker Friendship, the Canadair CL-44, and the Vickers Viscount.
- Introduction of the Boeing 757 and 737. The first Boeing 757-200 aircraft joined the fleet in 1990, and became an important aircraft for Icelandair. Its first aircraft was given the name “Hafdís.”

Aug 31, 2021 · Icelandair's fleet in 2021 is still dominated by the Boeing 757. It has 18 757-200 and two 757-300 aircraft in use (as of July 2021, according to fleet data from ch-aviation.com ). It also operates four 767-300ER aircraft, six 737 MAX 8, and three 737 MAX 9s. Icelandair is still the largest 757 user across the North Atlantic.
