  1. I think it comes down to what you prefer; an extended journey/adventure type story or one that takes place here on earth. One designation between the two is how Interstellar is set in a more plausible future and has scientific theories worked into the story that aren't far off from actual science.

  2. Both are big sci fi, and Arrival has gotten a bit more critical praise than Interstellar - 8 oscars nominations including best picture vs. 5 and no best picture, although it made way less money at the box office (675 million vs. 185 million for arrival).

    • District 9 (2009) Arrival's vision of first contact is far more traditional than Neil Blomkamp's District 9, but there is also a chance his is even more realistic.
    • Looper (2012) Rian Johnson is a master at deconstructing a genre. So to see him do so with this sci-fi noir was a gamechanger. The film is the first in a long time to offer an excellent performance from Bruce Willis, who really captures the tortured soul of older Joe.
    • Moon (2009) Moon is a fantastic one-off science fiction drama with tons of twists and turns. This, as you might have guessed, this moon-based film tackles elements of agency, with the twist concerning a shocking cloning element.
    • Interstellar (2014) Arrival's unexpected time travel turn is a direct link to this space travel drama from Christopher Nolan. In both films, the protagonist has to suffer through the death of their child through time-bending means, but here, it is through one's younger self-traveling to the future.
  4. While I really enjoy Interstellar, I think it's story has some serious problems. It's a beautiful film, but I think Arrival blows it out of the water. And both with themes of love and timelessness, yes Arrival very much succeeds where Interstellar fails. Different, enjoyed them both.

While it's true that you could say that Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey was a huge influence on essentially every science-fiction film that came out after it, it really is apt to relate it to Interstellar. Both movies tackle similar theoretical ideas but the visual similarities are plain to see throughout Interstellar and the operatic tone ...

A very similar movie to Interstellar in terms of a direct and linear plot, James Gray's sci-fi thriller is one of the few recent science-fiction movies that are perhaps more intense than Christopher Nolan's impending apocalypse. Brad Pittplays the emotionally detached son of a famous missing astronaut who follows in his father's footsteps and becom...

Emotional detachment was a running theme for high-pedigree space movies of Interstellar's time period with Damien Chazielle's biographical drama of Neil Armstrong's pioneering journey to the moon focussing much more on the famous astronaut's state of mind throughout the mission. Another slightly more down to earth take on the space movie, Apollo 13 is just as thrilling and grandiose and as a movie like Interstellardespite being confined by the reality of spaceflight in the early 1970s.
