Not really. The same difference between long and short vowels exists in English: father vs. but, leave vs. live, cool vs. wool. In Norwegian there's a similar difference in consonants though, so after a short vowel you'll typically get a long consonant and vice-versa. If it's a continuous consonant like L or N, just hold it a little longer.
