On October 26, 1956, Benjamin was born in Mobile, Alabama. She was raised by her mother, who worked as a waitress. After graduating high school, Benjamin studied at Xavier University of Louisiana. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1979. In 1984 she completed her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
