John was the fourth son of Count Erard II of Brienne, a participant in the Second and Third Crusades. Though we do not know his specific date of birth, we can infer he was the youngest child on account of his omission from the earliest reference to Erard’s other sons in a charter dating back to 1177 (the charter itself describes them as “liberis”, “children”).
