Apr 13, 2023 · On May 15, 1972, Arthur Bremer shot presidential candidate George Wallace five times at a Maryland rally. And once his diaries were published while he was behind bars, it became clear that he also wanted to assassinate Richard Nixon.
Bremer was found guilty and sentenced to 63 years (53 years after an appeal) in a Maryland prison for the shooting of Wallace and three bystanders. After 35 years of incarceration, Bremer was released from prison on November 9, 2007.

Bremer shot Wallace during a campaign rally for the presidential candidate in Laurel, Maryland, in May 1972. When police searched his car, they discovered two books about Robert Kennedy’s assassin, Sirhan Sirhan. Bremer spent thirty-five years in prison and was released on parole in Maryland in 2007.
He had a chance to shoot Wallace but did not take it because it would have meant seriously injuring two teenagers. The jury convicted Bremer, convinced that he understood the illegality of his actions and their possible consequences in his own death or imprisonment.
