Atualmente, o tétum é a língua com maior expressão em Timor-Leste. Apesar de o tétum-praça possuir variações regionais e sociais, hoje o seu uso é alargado porque é compreendido por quase toda a população timorense. É este tétum-praça que foi adotado como "língua oficial" com a designação de Tétum Oficial.
