Georgia history textbooks are used in the state’s public school systems to educate eighth-grade students about Georgia’s diverse past, cultures, and peoples.
Named after King George II of Great Britain, Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution, on January 2, 1788. It declared its secession from the Union on January 21, 1861, and was one of the original seven Confederate states. It was the last state to be restored to the Union, on July 15, 1870.
English settlement began in 1733 at Savannah when James Oglethorpe established a refuge for debtors. It was the last of the original 13 English colonies. European settlement accelerated after the American Revolution, and the last of the Indians were forcibly removed in the 1830s.
