- 1:53Palestinian bodies buried in mass grave following Israeli transferReuters VideosSTORY: Body bags were laid out for a mass burial in Gaza on Monday, after Israel returned 80 bodies it had previously taken from various graves and locations across the strip. That’s according to Palestinian officials, who said it’s unclear whether the bodies had been dug up from cemeteries by the army during the ground offensive, or whether they were "detainees who had been tortured and killed." There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the return of the bodies. Yamen Abu Suleiman, the director of the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service in Khan Younis told Reuters the names of the victims and where they came from is unknown. He said the bodies would be examined for cause of death. This woman came to the mass burial, looking for her lost father and son. She said: "The feeling is tragic, one feels deep sorrow and questions how this could happen to us. It is devastating and above this to lose a son and not be able to find his body. One becomes exhausted and emotionally affected when seeing everyone else retrieving and burying their martyrs while I cannot find out where my son or father is.” In Jerusalem, the Israeli Hostages Families Forum asked why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would allow the handover of Palestinian bodies without a ceasefire deal with Hamas. Meanwhile, residents in Khan Younis said Israeli shelling continued overnight, including in areas for which Israel had issued evacuation orders, saying militants had been waging attacks from there. The Israeli military said, that in a Sunday airstrike, it had killed Abdel-Fattah Al-Zriei, whom it said was involved in the weapons manufacturing department in Hamas.6 hours ago

Hezbollah and its backer Iran have vowed to retaliate against Israel for the killings. And the United States, France, Britain and Italy are among countries urging their citizens in Lebanon to leave while flights are available. Airlines including Air France are avoiding Iranian and Lebanese airspace and canceling flights to Israel and Lebanon. Mia Warde is Lebanese, and lives in Paris with her partner Jordin. "...so we’re leaving now instead of leaving end of August. And because we also have a baby, so it’s a huge responsibility, so we didn’t want to stay and take any risk.” JORDIN: “We tried to leave as soon as possible and picking among the flights, the available flights.” The United Nations has asked the families of its staff to leave Lebanon and the Swedish embassy has temporarily relocated its staff to Cyprus. Emergency medical supplies arrived on Monday to equip Lebanon's hospitals for possible war injuries. The World Health Organization delivered 32 tons of medical supplies, including at least 1,000 trauma kits. Hospitals in southern Lebanon are worn down by years of economic meltdown as well as tit-for-tat exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah. Over the last 10 months, since war broke out in Gaza, they've struggled to cope with wounded patients. But others in Lebanon seemed more relaxed. On the coast near Tyre, about 12 miles from the border with Israel, people splashed about in the sea as black smoke from Israeli shelling rose nearby. Resident Ghalib Badawy said he wasn't going anywhere. “We are heroes of the resistance, we are steadfast people, we are the people of this land, we will not run away and we are not afraid, neither of Israel nor anyone else."14 hours ago
- 1:04Australia raises terror threat level to 'probable'Reuters VideosSTORY: :: Australia raises its terror threat level to 'probable' from 'possible' :: August 5, 2024 :: Canberra, Australia :: Anthony Albanese, Australian Prime Minister "I want to reassure Australians probable does not mean inevitable and it does not mean there is intelligence about an imminent threat or danger. But the advice that we have received is that more Australians are embracing a more diverse range of extreme ideologies and it is our responsibility to be vigilant. To be clear this is the same threat level that was in place in Australia for more than eight years before it was lowered in November of 2022." "Since then we have seen a global rise in politically motivated violence and extremism. Many democracies are working to address this including our friends in the the United States and in the United Kingdom. There are many things driving this global trend towards violence. Governments around the world are concerned about youth radicalisation, online radicalisation and the rise of new mixed ideologies." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had raised the threat level following advice from security services, but said there was no imminent threat of an attack. Australia lowered the threat level to "possible" in 2022, following eight years at "probable". Mike Burgess, director general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, the country's main intelligence agency, said the decision was "not a direct response" to tensions in the Middle East in the aftermath of the conflict between Israel and Hamas since Oct. 7. "Indirectly though, there have been important and relevant impacts. The conflict has fuelled grievances, promoted protests, exacerbated division, undermined social cohesion and elevated intolerance," added Burgess. Australia has seen several violent attacks in recent months, some of which have been designated as motivated by extremism.22 hours ago
