The romance novelist had her first child at 19, and her last at 40, telling The Telegraph UK in 2006 that she had spent 35 years of her life being a full time mother – “the most fulfilling job” she’s ever done.
The biggest subject of all for me, and the dearest one, is my children. I was an only child, lived alone with my father from the time I was six, and rarely saw other children, except in school. It was an era when life didn’t center around children, and I had to fit in quietly.
We had six, and suddenly my life was full of kids. Millions of them. Not only our children, but all their friends too. Within a few years, we had teenagers, babies, kids of all ages all over the place. I loved it and still do. Nothing makes me happier than a house full of kids.
She also ventured into children's fiction, penning a series of 57 illustrated books for young readers. These books, known as the "Max and Martha" series, aim to help children face real-life problems: new baby, new school, loss of loved one, etc. In addition, Steel has authored the "Freddie" series.
