- 3:01Biden's shaky Trump debate alarms DemocratsReuters VideosSTORY: The first televised debate between U.S. President Joe Biden, and his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump saw a shaky, tentative performance from Biden that rattled Democrats. While Trump battered him with falsehoods and the two oldest U.S. presidential candidates ever descended into an exchange of personal insults. TRUMP: “The whole country is exploding because of you." BIDEN: "My son was not a loser. Was not a sucker. You're the sucker. You're the loser.” Appearing on CNN's Presidential Debate on Thursday, four months before Election Day in November, the two traded barbs on abortion, inflation, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, even their golf games, as they aimed to shake up what opinion polls show has been a virtually tied race for months. A hoarse-sounding Biden stumbled in the debate's first half-hour, and Trump pounced: BIDEN: "Excuse me, with - dealing with - everything we had to do with - look if - we finally beat Medicare." TRUMP: "He was right. He did beat Medicaid, he beat it to death." Eighty-one-year-old Biden and 78-year-old Trump are under pressure to show they're fit for office. As the debate wore on, Trump issued a barrage of critiques - many of them, well-worn falsehoods.. ... including migrants carrying out a crime wave and that Democrats support infanticide. Studies show immigrants do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native-born Americans. Trump also dodged questions about the January 6 Capitol attack, refused to accept any responsibility and claimed that many of those arrested were innocent. BIDEN: "What he's telling you is simply not true. The fact is that there was no effort on his part to stop what was going on up on Capitol Hill. And all those people, every one of those convicted deserves to be convicted." The debate carried on with no live audience and strict rules on microphone use, which aimed to avoid chaos that roiled their first debate in 2020. Still, the pair took every chance to make jabs at each other: TRUMP: "I wasn't really going to run until I saw the horrible job he did. He's destroying our country." Biden went after Tump over his felonies. BIDEN: "You have the morals of an alley cat.” TRUMP: “I didn't have sex with a porn star.” While concerns about the eligibility for office weigh heavily for both candidates, Biden's performance Thursday could land a major blow to his campaign, at least in the short term. Two White House officials said that Biden had a cold. One top Biden donor, who did not want to be named, called the U.S. President's performance "disqualifying" and expects a fresh round of calls for him to step aside ahead of the party's national convention in August. A Reuters-Ipsos poll that ended Sunday showed voters think Trump is a better candidate for the economy and immigration matters, while Biden had the edge over Trump for responding to threats to democracy.3 days ago
- 0:53'We need to beat this guy': Biden after debating TrumpReuters VideosSTORY: ::June 27, 2024 ::Biden says 'we need to beat this guy' while dropping into post-debate event ::Atlanta, Georgia “Look, folks, what's going to happen over the next couple of days is they're going to be, they're going to be out there fact checking, all the things he said. I can't think of one thing he said that was true. Oh, I'm not being facetious. But look, we're going to beat this guy. We need to beat this guy. And I need you in order to beat him. You're the people I'm running for. (Audience chanting: “We need you”) He says he's going to be the retribution for his supporters. You are the reason why America is as good as we are. We're the finest nation in the whole damn world. Nobody’s close. Let's keep going." Biden told the audience that Trump had lied throughout the debate, and that fact checkers would bear that out in the coming days. Earlier, in the first presidential debate of the 2024 race, the two men traded barbs on abortion, immigration, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, their handling of the economy and even their golf games as they each sought to shake up what opinion polls show has been a virtually tied race for months.3 days ago

- 2:05Biden struggles, Trump spouts falsehoods in debateReuters VideosSTORY: :: A hoarse President Joe Biden has a shaky start in his debate with Donald Trump A hoarse-sounding President Joe Biden verbally stumbled early on in the CNN presidential debate with Donald Trump while Trump rattled off a series of attacks, including a number of falsehoods. :: June 27, 2024 :: Atlanta, Georgia Biden: "When I (unclear) is to fix the taxes. For example, we have a 1000 trillionaires in America, I mean billionaires in America. And what's happening? They are in a situation where they, in fact, pay 8.2% in taxes. If they just pay 24%, 25%, either one of those numbers, it may raise $500 million, billion dollars, I should say, in a ten year period. We would be able to right wipe out his debt, we'd be to be able to help make sure that all the things we need to do - childcare, elder care, making sure that we continue to strengthen our health care system, making sure that we're able to make every single solitary patient eligible for what I've been able to do with, with, with the COVID, excuse me, with - dealing with - everything we had to do with - look - if - we finally beat Medicare. Moderator: "Thank you, President Biden. President Trump." Trump : "He was right. He did beat Medicaid, beaten to death and is destroying Medicare." :: Trump said he would accept election results but claimed, without evidence, there was fraud in 2020 Trump: "If it's a fair and legal and good election. Absolutely. I would have much rather accepted these, but the. The fraud and everything else was ridiculous. And if you want, we'll have a news conference on it in a week or we'll have another one of these on in a week. But I will. Absolutely. There's nothing I'd rather do. It would be much easier for me to do that. Then I'm running again. I wasn't really going to run until I saw the horrible job he did. He's destroying our country." Biden: "There is no evidence of that at all. And I tell you what, I doubt you. You'll accept it because you're such a whiner. The idea if you lose again, you accept it anything. You can't stand the loss. Something snapped in you and you lost the last time. :: White House officials said Biden had a cold, but his performance may raise age concerns "We've made significant progress from the debacle that was left by President Trump in his last term."3 days ago
