Three impressive buildings host one of the most significant collections in Germany, featuring masterpieces from the Middle Ages till today. The Hamburg Kunsthalle on Glockengießerwall was founded in 1817 by the Hamburg Kunstverein — a local art society — but was not built until 1869.

The collection online currently includes around 300 masterpieces and all currently exhibited works from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography and graphics as well as more than 57.000 drawings and prints from the Kupferstichkabinett and the library. The collection online is being continually expanded.
