Last but not least, the 1971 film Wake In Fright from Canadian director Ted Kotcheff is an amazing cinematic exploration of a man's dissent into despair set in the Australian outback. I think it's made all the more powerful being told through an outsider's lens. From what I've read Scorsese played a hand in bringing it back from obscurity.
