In 1861, Countess Angelina, who is presently ruling Bergamo in Southeastern Europe, marries Mario, a simple baron whom she has known since childhood. On their wedding night, the Bergamo castle, which holds a strategically important position on the road to Rome, is about to be taken over by Hungarian hussars, led by an imperious colonel.
The centerpiece of these is the titular lady in ermine, the Countess Francesca (also Grable) who, three hundred years before the events of the film, showed up to the tent of the commander of another army led by The Duke (also Fairbanks) dressed only in a white ermine coat and barefoot (as she is presented in the painting).
Circa 1861, Angelina, ruling countess of an Italian principality, is at a loss when invaded by a Hungarian army. Her lookalike ancestress Francesca, who saved a similar situation 300 years before, comes to life from a portrait to help her descendant.
