Georgetown Female Seminary. Miss English's Seminary for Young Ladies was located in this building from 1820 to 1861. Georgetown Female Seminary (later, Waverley Seminary) was an American school for young women located in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
Aug 20, 2012 · About 140 girls boarded each year at Miss Lydia English’s Georgetown Female Seminary. One of the most famous was Harriet Williams, the teenage bride of the middle aged Russian nobleman whose marital home is at 3322 O St. NW. The seminary was three floors high and contained 19 bedrooms, a library, several parlors, and porches on the wings.
Located in the Georgetown Historic District, the long-standing historical influence of Lydia English’s Female Seminary and Seminary Hospital is still seen... Built in the 1820s, this large Federal style complex would become Lydia English’s Female Seminary, a school for “fashionable” women.
After the war, alumnae of the school, Mary E. Bibb and S. A. Lipscomb, opened the Georgetown Female Seminary here in 1866. Lipscomb ran the school after 1871, and later moved it into Washington, renaming it Waverley Seminary. This building eventually became apartments, and underwent restoration in 1953.

Jan 31, 2022 · The 25,000-plus-square-foot property at 1305-1315 30th Street NW was built in the 1820s as Miss Lydia English’s Georgetown Female Seminary, a finishing school for the daughters of well-to-do types and notable names of the era including, reportedly, 17th president Andrew Johnson.
