  3. Mar 19, 1982 · Analogue vocoder built in the early 1980s by the R. Barth company in Hamburg, Germany. Seen in multiple pictures both in Mike's studio (it's on top of the Fairlight keyboard in the photo inside the LP gatefold) and on the Five Miles Out tour. Also used in QE2.

  4. Five Miles Out, the album, was more popular than Oldfield's previous few releases. It charted at No. 7 in the UK, whereas both QE2 (1980) and Platinum (1979) had failed to reach the top twenty. Oldfield's commercial revival would continue with subsequent albums Crises (1983) and Discovery (1984).

  6. Vocoder - A device that featured heavily on QE2 and his next album, Five Miles Out. A vocoder is able to take the characteristics of one signal (the modulator) and impart them on another (the carrier).

  7. Preston also played percussion with Brand X, the funk jazz group with Phil Collins on drums. Morris Pert - After having contributed drums to Platinum, QE2 and Five Miles Out, Morris Pert returns here on percussion, the job he's perhaps better known for.
