Tama Art University (多摩美術大学, Tama bijutsu daigaku) or Tamabi (多摩美) is a private art university located in Tokyo, Japan. It is known as one of the top art schools in Japan.
Since its inception, Tama Art University has been dedicated to the pursuit of both freedom and art. However, the concept of freedom incorporated in the university’s ideology is not a gift, but an obligation.
Under the slogan of "Made by Hands", it is today one of Japan’s leading art schools, winning both national and international recognition. It is based on two campuses and has two seminar houses, one in the foothills of Mount Fujiyama.
The goal of the program is to make efforts to conduct research that will contribute to the development of new Japanese paintings by intensely focusing on the substance of the works, always believing in painting as an art form, being boldly creative, and being flexible and progressive.
Since its founding in 1935, Tama Art University has gone on to produce large numbers of outstanding artists who have succeeded in various genres around the globe, including Nobuo Sekine and Kishio Suga, who led the avant-garde art movement "Mono-ha," which became very popular in the United States.
