Newnham College is the lively and sociable women’s College at the heart of the University of Cambridge. Founded in 1871, we are the oldest College run by women, for women. At its heart, a Cambridge College is a community of learning, teaching and research.
Newnham College is a women's constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college was founded in 1871 by a group organising Lectures for Ladies, members of which included philosopher Henry Sidgwick and suffragist campaigner Millicent Garrett Fawcett. It was the second women's college to be founded at Cambridge, following Girton College.
Newnham is one of the 31 colleges of the University of Cambridge: a place of learning, teaching and research. Our college was established in 1871, as a women’s college at a time when women were not allowed to attend the University.

Newnham College was established in 1871, as a women’s college at a time when women were not allowed to attend the University. Newnham began as a house for five students in Regent Street in Cambridge in 1871. Lectures for Ladies had been started in Cambridge in 1870.

History. Newnham was established in 1871 as a house in which young women could reside while attending lectures in Cambridge, long before they were allowed to become full members of the university with the granting of degrees to women in 1948.
Jun 20, 2024 · The book describes 'the idea of Newnham', which arose from supporters of female education in the mid-nineteenth century, the parallel trajectory of the founders of Girton College, and the small beginning of what became Newnham, with five students in a house overlooking Parker's Piece in 1871.
