Anthony Johnson arrives in Virginia under the name Antonio. He belongs to Richard Bennett until 1635 and marries another of Bennett’s slaves, Mary.

The Johnsons acquire their freedom, presumably through self-purchase, and move to Northampton County.

Purchasing five headrights (50-acre allotments granted for each indentured servant transported from England) from neighboring planters enables Johnson to assemble a modest 250-acre tobacco estate on Pungoteague Creek in Accommack County.

A fire destroys most of the Johnson estate. The Johnsons appeal to the county for a tax waiver, which is granted despite a 1645 affirmation that the head tax applied to all “negro men and women.” Patronage from Bennett and possibly others makes this possible.

Johnson and his neighbor, Lieutenant John Neale, clash over a cow. The thorough investigation and ultimate dismissal of Neale’s claims demonstrate the powerful patronage Johnson enjoyed.

The black man John Casor asks a neighbor for help, saying Johnson has kept him illegally as a slave, when he was in fact an indentured servant. The legal case ends in favor of Johnson, returning Casor to slavery.

The Johnson family moves to Somerset County, Maryland alongside white planters Ann Toft and Randall Revell. In a complicated arrangement, the latter couple claims the Johnsons as headrights to gain additional land, but this benefits all and the Johnsons’ freedom is not in question.

John Johnson, Jr., grandson to Anthony and Mary, purchases a Somerset County plantation and names it “Angola,” perhaps a reference to his grandfather’s homeland.
