Flint glass is optical glass that has relatively high refractive index and low Abbe number (high dispersion). Flint glasses are arbitrarily defined as having an Abbe number of 50 to 55 or less. The currently known flint glasses have refractive indices ranging between 1.45 and 2.00.
Flint glass, heavy and durable glass characterized by its brilliance, clarity, and highly refractive quality. Developed by George Ravenscroft (q.v.) in 1675, it ushered in a new style in glassmaking and eventually made England the leading glass producer of the world.

Flint glasses are optical glasses with an Abbe number below 50. This indicates strong chromatic dispersion and tentatively a high refractive index (although not necessarily a higher one than for a crown glass ). Typically, the refractive index is larger than 1.55.
Flint glasses, because of their high index, feature higher Fresnel reflection loss and thus should always be specified with an anti-reflection (AR) coating. Figure 1: Sample Optical Glass Transmittance Curves. Additional Properties.
Flint Glass. One of two types of optical glass used in the manufacturing of achromatic lenses. Flint glass has higher dispersion and higher index of refraction than crown glass.
A misnomer for English and American lead glass. The term came into use in 1674, when George Ravenscroft’s new glass formula included ground, calcined flint as a source of silica. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the term was applied to decolorized glass, even when it contained no flint.
The most common types of glasses used in optics are crown glasses and flint glasses, designations based on their dispersions. Flint glasses contain lead. These designations are further subdivided by composition and have letter designations and number designations called "glass numbers". Example data for glasses: Glass.
Mar 2, 2024 · Flint glass, also known as lead glass, is a type of high-refractive-index glass that has been a staple in the world of glassmaking for centuries. Its name originates from the flint nodules used by glassmakers in the 17th century to produce the glass.
May 3, 2024 · Flint glass stands apart from other types of glass due to its unparalleled clarity and brilliance. Its transparent nature allows light to pass through unimpeded, creating stunning visual effects and enhancing the appearance of whatever it contains.
