My father, Robert Kyle Burns, Jr., was a cultural anthropologist. His area of study was Alpine and Mediterranean peasants. My first memory, at age two and a half—it’s just a short clip, a fragmentary mental movie—was of him building a photographic darkroom in the basement of our tract house in a development in Newark, Delaware.
