Valeska Gert war das älteste Kind des Berliner Kaufmanns Theodor Samosch und dessen Ehefrau Augusta Rosenthal. Auf Veranlassung der Mutter erhielt sie ab ihrem siebten Lebensjahr Tanzstunden. 1915/1916 nahm sie Schauspielunterricht bei Maria Moissi und Alfred Breiderhoff.
