   How did Gwinnett County get its name?

   • The county was named for Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Farming, particularly cotton, was the main industry, with enslaved labor contributing to the wealth of the area. The Civil War (1861-65) destroyed much of that economic prosperity but actually caused little physical damage in the county.
