Jan 26, 2016 · Hiking trip report with map, gpx, and photos for Carey's Castle and Cache, located in Joshua Tree National Park, California. This is a 8.0 mile out-and-back hike with 1300 cumulative feet of elevation gain that takes about 3-5 hours to complete.
One such legend surrounds Carey's Castle, a Joshua Tree mystery, sought by many but found and visited by few. I first learned of The Castle in a campfire story over twenty years ago, but the teller did not know of its whereabouts.
If you pop those two words into Google, you’ll see plenty of pictures of some fancy Irish estate – but this Carey’s Castle is actually a tiny homestead tucked into a gap between two mega-sized boulders.
Carey's Castle is deliciously remote and enigmatic. Little is known of the reclusive builder who appropriated a prehistoric Indian rock shelter and added rock and mortar walls, three windows and a door.
Careys Castle Trail is a little used route starting at the southern border of Joshua Tree National Park. It is renowned for its seclusion, as it is one of the less trafficked trails within Joshua Tree National Park.
