Exodus, American epic film, released in 1960, that was Otto Preminger ’s big-budget adaptation of Leon Uris ’s best seller about the founding of the modern state of Israel in 1948. The film opens in post- World War II Cyprus, where Jewish refugees have gathered after British forces prevented them from entering Palestine.
Ari Ben Canaan, a Haganah rebel who had been a decorated captain in the Jewish Brigade of the British Army in the Second World War, obtains a cargo ship and smuggles 611 Jewish inmates out of the camp for an illegal voyage to Mandate Palestine before being discovered by military authorities.
