Not $5 million. $50,000. The Asylum of Satan was developed as campy second-show drive-in delight and it delivers on all counts.
The simple synopsis revolves around a beautiful young singer who gets committed to the private asylum of Dr. Spector allegedly following a mental breakdown, but it quickly turns out she was targeted all along as the ideal virgin to sacrifice to Satan during a ritual ceremony in the basement of the asylum.
Shot in Louisville, Kentucky on a budget of just $50,000, Asylum of Satan was director William Girdler’s first feature film, made when he was 24 years old. Sweet and fragile concert pianist Lucina Martin (Carla Borelli) is sent to Pleasant Hill Hospital - a sanitarium - by her physician, Dr Nolan (Jack Peterkin).
A young woman finds herself held against her will in an eerie mental asylum by the sinister "Dr. Specter" and his masculine-looking assistant, Martine. She begins to suspect that the visions of horror she experiences are not nightmares and that she is due to be sacrificed to The Evil One.
