The original castle (Osaka-jo) was erected in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi following the 16th century unification of the country but Japan's historical buildings have succumbed to earthquake, fire and modern warfare. The castle we visited is no different being a reconstruction dating from 1931 so rather than granite we see concrete.
