Jedediah Smith was an American explorer, fur trader, and mapmaker who traveled across the Rocky Mountains, the American West, and the Southwest in the early 19th century. He was the first to cross the Great Basin Desert and the Mojave Desert, and he was killed by Comanche in 1831.
