The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a must-see in Savannah, GA, and it only takes one quick glance to understand why. Its architecture is incredibly beautiful! Even though most locals call it “The Cathedral” or “Cathedral St. John,” the church officially became known as the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in 2020.
Basilica. April 2020. With the decree dated April 22, 2020, Pope Francis bestowed on the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist the tile of “Minor Basilica” as an honor recognizing the historical significance, architectural beauty, and liturgical renown of our church.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica near Lafayette Square at 222 East Harris Street, Savannah, Georgia, in the United States. It is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah.
The 143-year-old Roman Catholic Cathedral officially named “The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist.” A basilica must “stand out as a center of active and pastoral liturgy,” according to the 1989 Vatican document Domus ecclesiae.
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a magnificent structure, a grand monument to the faith of thousands – past and present – and a wonderful house of prayer for all peoples. But the road to today was a long one; negotiated only through the arduous sacrifice of generations of the Faithful.
