One of the most controversial figures in the decades leading up to the Civil War, Roger Brooke Taney was born on March 17, 1777, into a prominent slave-owning family in Calvert County, Maryland. Taney studied law at Dickinson College, graduating in 1795 after being elected class valedictorian.
