George Square is the main civic centre in Glasgow.The square hosts several major events throughout the year and is home to many historical monuments. Glasgow’s main war memorial is located at one end of the square in front of the Glasgow City Council Chamber, and attractions including the Gallery of Modern Art are within a short walking distance.
George Square is a nice place to spend some time while in Glasgow. The square is beautiful and centrally located. The best feature of the square is the many historically important statues.

This iconic central city square was turned into a 1940s film set for Frank's memorable proposal to Claire in season one. The scene included old-fashioned cars and old-fashioned outfits, with the men trooping around the square wearing trenchcoats amid the real-life architecture we see in the area today.

Oct 11, 2022 · In Swan’s book, ‘Select views of Glasgow and it’s Environs’ it describes George Square as such:“The interior of the square is very tastefully laid out with trees, shrubbery, and flowers, intersected by numerous gravel walks; and in the centre it is intended to erect a light dome, supported on pillars, having under it a basin, with a jet d’eau, or cascade of water.”
Stately George Sq is the civic centre of Glasgow, dominated by the town hall – City Chambers – on the eastern side. The large open space is dignified by statues of famous folk from Glasgow and the surrounding area, including Robert Burns, James Watt and Sir John Moore, and, atop a column, Sir Walter Scott.
To the east side of the square, there was the celebrated City Chambers (opened in 1888) that was designed by London based Scottish architect William Young. George Square which was once a private garden had become a full-fledged public space with statues of dignitaries like James Watt, Robert Burns and David Livingstone decking it up.
George Square is the heart of the city, nestled between Glasgow City Chambers and Queen Street train station. It is a sprawling square sporting a baker's dozen worth of statues.
