The Mausoleum of Khawaja Ahmed Yasawi is situated in the north-eastern part of the modern-day town of Turkestan (formerly known as Hazrat-e Turkestan), an ancient centre of caravan trade known earlier as Khazret and later as Yasi, in the southern part of Kazakhstan.
The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yaswi, a distinguished Sufi master of the 12th century, is situated in southern Kazakhstan, in the north-eastern section of the city of Turkestan (Yasi). Built between 1389 and 1405, by order of Timur (Tamerlane), the ruler of Central Asia, it replaced a smaller 12th century mausoleum.
Ahmad Yasawi (1103-1166) emerges as a prominent figure in Central Asian history, revered as a Sufi poet and preacher of significant influence. Composing his verses in Chaghatai, he left a lasting legacy through his renowned collection of mystical spiritual poems known as “Hikmat,” first published in 1878.
Ahmed Yasawi is one of the brightest representatives of Sufism who founded his own tariqah. He was born in 1093 in Sayram in the territory of modern Kazakhstan. After his father’s death his family moved to Yassy town (present Turkestan). When he lived in Bukhara he was a disciple of one of the famous Muslim notionalists – Yusuf Hamadani.
