Les Misérables (/ l eɪ ˌ m ɪ z ə ˈ r ɑː b (əl),-b l ə /, French: [le mizeʁabl]) is a French epic historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century.
Les Misérables is a 2012 epic period musical film directed by Tom Hooper from a screenplay by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Herbert Kretzmer, based on the stage musical of the same name by Schönberg, Boublil, and Jean-Marc Natel, which in turn is based on the 1862 novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.
Set in early 19th-century France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption, released from jail in 1815 after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister's starving child.
