Having turned into one hell of a money-generating hit machine for CBS, Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly) launches his fourth simultaneous series for the network this Monday with Mom. Anna Faris (Scary Movie, The House Bunny) stars as Christie, a single mother raising two kids while also negotiating her newfound sobriety and a rocky relationship with her own mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney), whose partying ways Christie ended up following in the footsteps of.

We meet Christie in the midst of feeling overwhelmed – unhappy with her life as a waitress, having a less than ideal, secret relationship with someone she works with and realizing her own teenage daughter, Violet (Sadie Calvano), has been seemingly sticking to the family trajectory, sneaking a boy into her bedroom and attempting to cover it up with more lies.

But yes, this is a comedy, with Lorre and his co-creators Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker looking for the funny side in Christie’s struggles and going for some outrageous humor along the way, such as Christie lamenting seeing Bonnie once, “lick cocaine crumbs out of a shag carpet.”

Certainly, the lead actresses are two great gets for a network sitcom. Faris has long been a notably fun and game comedic actress, always fully committing and willing to look ridiculous. and Janney is, of course, an awesome talent, whose usual classiness is impressively swept aside to play the “Done it all” (in every sense) Bonnie. Both do their best to make Mom work and Faris’ delivery sometimes can go a long way to make some of the lesser jokes sell. Allison Janney and Anna Faris in Mom.Mom opens in the midst of Christie losing it at her job, crying as she attempts to take orders from customers. It’s an oddly paced sequence that feels really jarring with no lead-in to help us be invested in Christie before we see her get to this point. But Faris still gets some laughs, even from simple lines, like when she’s told there have been reports of a waitress “having a nervous breakdown” and says, in-between sobs, “Is it Jennifer?”

The strong cast, including Breaking Bad’s Matt Jones as the deadbeat dad to Christie’s son, Roscoe (Blake Garrett Rosenthal), are likeable and, among a group of notably poor new comedy pilots this fall, Mom manages to fall more in the “mediocre” range as it begins than being outright bad… which is damning with faint praise, to be sure. But there ar...
