Liverpool John Moores University (abbreviated LJMU) is a public research university in the city of Liverpool, England. The university can trace its origins to the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, established in 1823. This later merged to become Liverpool Polytechnic.

We can trace our roots back to the Industrial Revolution. In 1992, we became one of the UK’s new universities, taking our name from one of Liverpool’s great entrepreneurs and philanthropists, Sir John Moores.

That is the name we adopted in 1992 when the Liverpool Polytechnic gained university status. A name chosen in honour of Liverpool businessman and philanthropist Sir John Moores. We’re the only university in the UK to be named, at the time, after a living person.
