Spitalfields, neighbourhood in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. It is situated just east of the Bishopsgate section of the former London Wall. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the priory and hospital, or “spital,” of St. Mary, which was founded in 1197 by Walter and Rose Brown.

Nov 1, 2013 · The name Spitalfields comes from the hospital and priory of St. Mary’s Spittel, founded in 1197 by Walter Brunus and his wife, Roisia. The hospital was a place of refuge and care for the poor, sick and travellers. It was located on the east side of Bishopsgate, one of the main roads leading into the City of London.
