The Epirus Region (Περιφέρεια Ηπείρου, Periféria Ipírou), as it is currently defined, was established in the 1987 administrative reform and was divided into prefectures (νομοί, nomí), which were further subdivided into municipalities (δήμοι, dhími).
A rugged and mountainous region, Epirus was the north-west area of ancient Greece. [2] It was inhabited by the Greek tribes of the Chaonians, Molossians, and Thesprotians. It was home to the sanctuary of Dodona, the oldest oracle in ancient Greece, and the second most prestigious after Delphi.

- Ioannina. Ioannina is the capital city of the Epirus region and it is worth spending two to three days in this bustling university town. We made a base at the Hotel du Lac Congress Centre and visited all of its top attractions and ended each day with the typical three-hour dinners that make Greek hospitality so famous.
- Zagori. Zagori is just an hour and a half from Ioannina and if you have a car, you can do day trips from the city to explore the adventure capital of Epirus, but we suggest making a base in town to really make the most of it Alpine Zone is the company for all your adventure and adrenaline activities here and there is plenty of things to see and do in Zagori.
- Tzoumerka. Tzoumerka is located just an hour from Ioannina and is one of the most popular places to visit in Epirus due to its gorgeous village, outdoor adventures, stone arched bridge and famous monastery.

The coast has the kind of warm climate and pine trimmed coves you’d expect from the Ionian Islands, but inland the landscape becomes vast and winters blanket the peaks in snow.
