Asyut (Arabic: أسيوط Asyūṭ pronounced [ʔɑsˈjuːtˤ], from Coptic: ⲥⲓⲟⲟⲩⲧ, ⲥⲓⲱⲟⲩⲧ Siōwt [sɪˈjo(ː)wt]) is the capital of the modern Asyut Governorate in Egypt. It was built close to the ancient city of the same name, which is situated nearby.
