Cokato Township is a township in Wright County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,238 at the 2000 census. Cokato Township was organized in 1868, and named for the Sioux language word meaning "at the middle". The 1896 Cokato Temperance Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Cokato History. If there is one consistency to Cokato’s history, it’s change. When the Dakota camped along the shores of what is now known as Cokato Lake, they saw a completely different landscape— one of deep woods, rivers, lakes, and swampland.
Today, Cokato is still known as a Swedish and Finnish community. Coming of the railroad: The First Division of the St. Paul & Pacific Railroad Company (later known as the Great Northern) built a line west from Howard Lake to Willmar in 1869.
