- Eating Out. With a population of diverse, young and well-heeled locals with refined palates, Islington is one of London’s best areas for food. - Upper Street. Islington’s main thoroughfare has been around since the Middle Ages, but up until the 1700s was in agricultural land. Henry VIII used to hunt ducks here, while the spy, courtier and poet Sir Walter Raleigh had a plush residence on Upper Street.
- Almeida Theatre. One of the capital’s top producing theatres, named London Theatre of the Year at the Stage Awards, is just off Upper Street. The Almeida Theatre is a small venue with an international reputation, and is the first place to watch plays before they hit the West End.
- Screen on the Green. An Upper Street linchpin since 1913, the Screen on the Green is one of the UK’s longest functioning cinemas. The building faces Islington Green and stands out at night for its neon outline and glowing marquee.
- Dine in style. Foodies are spoilt for choice in Islington. On Upper Street alone, you can satisfy almost any cravings, from Brazilian churrasco to Vietnamese pho.
- Sugar rush. Sweet tooth? A scoop of handmade ice cream from Udderlicious will do the trick. Get more sugar highs from Paul A Young’s artisan chocolates or Belle Epoque’s eye-popping pastries.
- Brekkie or brunch? Tuck into a Tuscan breakfast at Food Lab; or head to Ottolenghi, famous for its cookbooks and mouthwatering window displays. On weekends, rise at the crack of dawn to beat the queues outside Sunday, for one of London’s tastiest brunches.
- Shop for treasures. Upper Street is lined with independent boutiques and quirky design stores. Shop cool Scandinavian labels at Wild Swan, charity finds at Mary’s Living & Giving, or retro gadgets and toys at After Noah.
