Novhorod-Siverskyy, city, northern Ukraine. The city emerged probably in the late 10th century. In the 11th century it was the centre of the Siversk principality in Kievan Rus. It was under Lithuanian (1356–1503), Russian (1503–1618), and Polish (1618–54) rule before becoming a part of the Cossack-controlled state known as the Hetmanate.
