Roseburg has been a dwelling place since time beyond memory, a village of native peoples residing in the pleasant groves on the eastern shore of the South Umpqua River when the first white men visited the region.
Roseburg is situated at the heart of the Hundred Valleys of the Umpqua in scenic, Southwestern Oregon. On Interstate 5, it is 67 miles south of the state's second largest city, Eugene, and 123 miles north of the California border.
Visitors can sip world-class wine at the birthplace of Oregon pinot noir, mountain bike through the evergreens along the North Umpqua Trail, catch whitewater thrills on the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River, and meander the Highway of Waterfalls for a peek at endless cascades.
Roseburg, city, seat (1854) of Douglas county, southwestern Oregon, U.S., on the South Umpqua River, between the Coast (west) and Cascade (east) ranges. Settled in 1851, it was known as Deer Creek but was renamed for Aaron Rose, who laid out the town site in 1854.
