- Alien - June 22, 1979. A cabin fever-style horror film aboard a spaceship, Alien supersedes good genre films as a standard-setting technical masterpiece.
- Aliens - July 18, 1986. Seven years after Alien was released, a sequel was brought to life by young gun James Cameron. Fresh off his success with The Terminator, Cameron rebooted Alien as an action film centered around the same protagonist.
- Alien 3 - May 22, 1992. After years of experience directing music videos, young director David Fincher was gifted an opportunity to direct the third installment of the Oscar-winning Alien franchise.
- Alien: Resurrection - November 26, 1997. Another five years later and Alien returned with the final entry in Weaver’s saga, Alien: Resurrection. Written by Joss Whedon (The Avengers), and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie), Alien: Resurrection resurrects Ripley after her fiery sacrifice at the end of Alien 3 in the form of a clone hundreds of years after her death.
- Alien vs. Predator. Release date: August 13, 2004. Cast: Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen. After a failed AvP project which was developed in the 90s, Shane Salerno’s script set the action in (back then) present day: 2004.
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Release date: December 25, 2007. Cast: Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz. 20th Century Fox’s (now Studios) second go at AvP was met with abysmal reviews and a cold shoulder from most fans, although it delivered enough unrestrained nastiness and refreshing in-universe concepts to get diehard fans talking.
- Prometheus. Release date: June 1, 2012. Cast: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron. The first of the Alien prequels by original director Ridley Scott starts in 2089 (prologue aside), with archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) discovering an ancient star map on Earth that sends them – backed by the Weyland Corporation – to the distant moon LV-223, where they arrive in December 2093.
- Alien: Covenant. Release date: May 12, 2017. Cast: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup. Once again, the second Alien prequel kicks off with a distant prologue which teases future events and discoveries.
- Alien vs Predator (2004) At first blush, it might seem strange to start an "Alien" journey with an "Alien" spin-off, but if accuracy is your aim, it's the place to begin.
- Alien vs Predator – Requiem (2007) Honestly, "Alien vs Predator — Requiem" is not a good film, and you probably shouldn't watch it. But, if you're intent on working through each film in true chronological order, it should technically be the next one you watch.
- Prometheus (2012) Scott's return to the "Alien" franchise is set some 90 years after the events of the "AVP" films, from 2091 to 2094. Though Sir Ridley has maintained that "Prometheus" is not a direct sequel to "Alien" but rather contains strands of the same "DNA," it does add to the mythology of the franchise in some fascinating ways.
- Alien: Covenant (2017) A sequel to "Prometheus" (and technically another quasi-prequel to the first "Alien" film), "Covenant" takes place in 2104, about 11 years after the events of "Prometheus."
