Atkinson has always been a photographer. When he was a Ph.D candidate working in neuroscience, he'd relax in the darkroom, printing in black-and-white. Later, as a key Apple engineer, photography was still a means for Atkinson to unwind and flex his right brain.
A gifted amateur photographer since he was 10, Atkinson easily crossed the technical and aesthetic boundary into the world of professional image-making, where he has become a major figure. Digital Sage: Atkinson uses technology not to trick but to render his intimate images in the finest detail.
He takes close-up photographs of stones that have been cut and polished. His works are highly regarded for their resemblance to miniature landscapes which are hidden within the stones. Atkinson's 2004 book Within the Stone features a collection of his close-up photographs.
