Bonaventure Cemetery is a rural cemetery located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah, Georgia. [1] The cemetery's prominence grew when it was featured in the 1994 novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, and in the subsequent movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the book. [3]
Known as Evergreen Cemetery from June 12, 1868 until July 7, 1907 when the City of Savannah purchased and changed the name to Bonaventure Cemetery. Located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River amid live oaks adorned with Spanish moss, Bonaventure Cemetery was established on land from the Bonaventure Plantation. Henry Urban was the architect.
The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing over 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance of the cemetery.
