Mankiewicz was born in New York City in 1897. His parents were German-Jewish immigrants: his father, Franz Mankiewicz, was born in Berlin and emigrated to the U.S. from Hamburg in 1892. He established himself as a prime wit rivaled only by George S. Kaufman , and pieces he wrote appeared in the top magazines of the time, including "Vanity Fair."
